Sweeney Todd

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

An exciting new production of Sweeney Todd comes to the Chichester Festival Theatre this autumn, starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton.

Laced with characteristically brilliant wit and dark humour, it tells of the return to a nineteenth century London of Sweeney Todd, after years of false imprisonment, and his savage quest for justice and retribution. Aided and abetted by the pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett, he sets out to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family many years before.
Combining horror with the English music hall, Sweeney Todd is a fascinating portrait of a man driven to madness by injustice and grief.

Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Sondheim’s compelling musical of corruption and revenge is commonly acknowledged as his masterpiece, and won critical acclaim in the 2007 film version created by Tim Burton, and starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
Stephen Sondheim’s other musicals include Follies, A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George and Passion.
